MAT IRVINE

Visual Effects Supervisor, Modelmaker, Author

Our British Invasion continues with modelmaker Mat Irvine. Although invariably thought of just working on SF series like Doctor Who and Blake’s 7, in Mat’s long career he designed a very wide range of effects for a very wide range of programs.

Mat’s also specialised in hobby kits for just as long, with numerous articles for magazines. Of his 14 books, five deal with model making. These include the definitive book on space models “Creating Space.” He also co-authored, with colleague Mike Tucker, “BBC-VFX” on the life and times of the Visual Effects Department.

Today, Mat occasionally runs the Doctor Who robotic dog, K-9, (most recently for the ‘final’ completion of the lost Who story, Shada) and still supplies factual space models to the Sky at Night, Stargazing Live and various exhibitions. He still writes articles and books and is a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society.

Mat was a wonderful guest in his last WonderFest appearance in 2012. Please welcome him back!
